Hotels often spend time selecting mattress comfort layers but overlook the base underneath. A premium mattress placed on a weak or noisy foundation will still create complaints. The support system affects firmness, airflow, noise, housekeeping access, and replacement cost. Platform Bases: Clean Look and Stable Support
A platform bed base provides a flat or slatted support surface integrated into the bed frame. It is now common in modern hotels because it creates a lower, cleaner profile and removes the need for a separate box spring. For foam and hybrid mattresses, platform bases distribute weight evenly and reduce motion transfer.
The most important detail is slat spacing. For foam mattresses, slats should be no more than 7.5cm apart; wider gaps can allow foam to dip and void mattress warranties. For pocket spring mattresses, 8–10cm spacing may be acceptable, but tighter spacing improves support. Plywood deck systems provide maximum support but reduce airflow unless ventilation holes are included.
Box Springs: Traditional Feel With More Components
Box springs add height and a softer traditional feel. They are still used in many North American hotels because guests recognize the visual profile. However, box springs add another component to inspect, clean, and eventually replace. Low-quality units can squeak, sag, or crack at the corners under hotel occupancy.
If using box springs, specify reinforced corners, anti-slip fabric, and a commercial warranty. For properties that rotate mattresses quarterly, box springs also need scheduled inspection for loose staples, broken wood rails, and fabric tears.
Noise Control Matters More Than Buyers Expect
Guest complaints about bed noise usually come from loose bolts, metal-to-metal contact, or weak center support legs. Platform beds should use locking hardware, rubber washers where metal brackets meet, and adjustable center support feet that remain firmly on the floor. For hard floors, specify rubber-bottomed feet; for carpet, wider leveling glides prevent sinking.
Housekeeping and Lifecycle Cost
Platform bases with enclosed sides reduce dust collection under the bed and create a cleaner visual line, but they limit under-bed inspection. Raised metal bases allow faster cleaning and pest inspection. For long-stay hotels, serviced apartments, and staff housing, easy cleaning often matters more than the luxury appearance of a boxed platform.
