Container planning begins with the packed carton, not the product catalogue dimension. Upholstered furniture needs protection and clearance; casegoods may nest or stack only within defined limits; mattresses and sofa beds have their own handling constraints. A realistic cubic-meter plan therefore combines geometry, protection, weight distribution and unloading sequence.
Build a packed-dimension table
For each item code, record finished quantity, carton quantity, external length, width, height, gross weight, stackability and orientation. Add protection thickness and any pallet, skid or accessory-carton allowance. Do not multiply an unverified product dimension by quantity and call it a loading plan.
| Field | Reason |
|---|---|
| External carton dimensions | Determines actual CBM and door clearance. |
| Gross weight | Supports floor loading and distribution decisions. |
| Stack limit | Prevents crushing and unsafe unloading. |
| Unload order | Stops accessible goods being buried beneath later-room items. |
Use nesting only when the product allows it
Nested chairs, removable legs or protected cushions can improve volume efficiency, but nesting must not create pressure marks, distortion or assembly confusion. Define separators, corner guards and maximum stack height in the packing instruction. A small saving in CBM is not worthwhile if it creates a high replacement rate.
Balance the load and protect voids
Place heavy, stable cartons low and distribute weight across the floor. Use approved blocking or bracing to limit movement without pressing against delicate surfaces. Record remaining voids and the material used to control them; loose filler that can shift or abrade products is not a substitute for a loading design.
Reconcile the final load
Before sealing, count cartons by item code, photograph the sequence, confirm the packing list and record container and seal numbers. If the planned quantity changes, update the list and inform the receiving team. A CBM estimate is not evidence that the container was loaded as planned.
