Two Guests, One Mattress, Zero Complaints
When two guests share a hotel bed, one partner turning over should not wake the other. When a guest sits on the edge to put on shoes, the mattress should not collapse. These are edge support and motion isolation problems, and they are among the most common bed-related complaints in hotel reviews. For buyers specifying hotel mattress edge support and motion isolation, the details are in the coil system and the perimeter construction.
Edge Support Systems
Foam encasement — a high-density foam rail around the entire mattress perimeter — is now the most common edge support system in hotel mattresses. It creates a firm seating edge, expands the usable sleep surface nearly to the border, and prevents the roll-off sensation that guests dislike. The foam rail should be at least 40—50kg/m³ density to resist compression over years of edge sitting.
Perimeter coil reinforcement uses firmer or thicker-gauge springs around the border instead of foam. It breathes better than foam encasement and ages differently — coils do not soften as predictably as foam — but the edge feel may be slightly less rigid. Either system works commercially when properly specified; the difference is in the handling and longevity profile.
Motion Isolation and Pocket Springs
Individually pocketed coils are the key to motion isolation. Each spring moves independently within its fabric pocket, so compression under one guest does not transfer across the mattress. Higher coil counts (800+ in queen size) generally improve both support precision and motion isolation, but coil gauge and pre-compression in the pocket also matter.
Memory foam and latex comfort layers further reduce motion transfer by absorbing energy at the surface. However, very thick soft layers can create a “trapped” feeling for guests who shift position during sleep. A balanced construction with responsive high-density foam or latex over a pocket coil core usually achieves the best commercial result.
Testing Edge Support and Motion During Procurement
- Sit on the mattress edge for at least 30 seconds — it should compress less than 4—5cm
- Roll from the center of the mattress toward the edge to feel at what point support drops off
- Test motion transfer by having another person shift position while you lie still
- Check that edge support feels consistent after 10+ edge-sit cycles
- Request edge foam density specifications and coil reinforcement details in the PO
