The Cushion Is Where Guests Judge Quality

A guest sits on a hotel lobby sofa and forms an opinion in under 3 seconds. That opinion comes from the cushion — not the frame, not the upholstery, not the legs. A cushion that bottoms out or feels lumpy signals cheap furniture. A cushion that supports evenly and rebounds instantly signals quality. For procurement managers, understanding cushion construction is the difference between a 3-year and an 8-year seating investment.

Foam Density — The Single Most Important Specification

Polyurethane foam density is measured in kg/m³. Residential sofa cushions typically use 18–25 kg/m³ foam, which loses 30–40% of its support within 2 years of regular use. Commercial-grade cushion foam starts at 30 kg/m³ and should be specified at 35–40 kg/m³ for high-traffic lobby seating. At 35 kg/m³, a foam cushion retains more than 85% of its original firmness after 80,000 compression cycles — equivalent to approximately 4–5 years of hotel lobby use.

ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) measures firmness, not quality. A 35 kg/m³ foam with 35 ILD and a 25 kg/m³ foam with 35 ILD feel identical on day one. After one year, the lower-density foam has softened significantly while the higher-density foam has not. Always specify density first, then adjust ILD for comfort preference.

Spring Systems Inside Cushions

Marshall spring units (individually pocketed coils encased in fabric pockets and set inside a foam border) offer the best combination of comfort and durability for commercial use. The springs provide progressive resistance — they compress gently at first, then stiffen as load increases — which prevents the “bottoming out” sensation that foam-only cushions produce under heavier guests. A Marshall unit with 40–50 coils per seat section wrapped in 35 kg/m³ foam casing is the benchmark specification for luxury hotel lobby sofas.

Sinuous wire (zigzag) springs under foam cushions serve as a support base, not a comfort layer. They prevent the cushion from sagging into the frame cavity and should be specified at 8-gauge minimum with 10–12 cm spacing between wires.

Fill Materials — Fiber, Feather, and Hybrid

Polyester fiber wrap (Dacron or similar) over foam cores adds surface softness and creates the crown — the slightly domed top surface of a cushion that looks full and inviting. The fiber wrap compresses over time. For commercial use, specify a minimum 25mm fiber wrap thickness and plan to replace fiber wraps every 24–36 months as a standard maintenance item.

Feather-and-down fill (typically 90% feather / 10% down in a downproof ticking envelope) provides the most luxurious seating experience but requires daily fluffing in commercial use. Without daily attention, feather cushions look deflated within weeks. Hotels that specify feather cushions must commit to a daily housekeeping fluff protocol — this adds approximately 60 labor hours annually for a property with 30 lobby sofas. For a 5-star property, yes. For a 3-star, no.

Warranty Language That Protects You

Standard residential sofa warranties exclude commercial use. When ordering for hotels, the cushion warranty must explicitly state commercial coverage. The minimum acceptable warranty for a commercial sofa cushion is 3 years against loss of resiliency exceeding 20% of original specifications. Request density and ILD test data for production-run cushions — not prototype samples — before accepting a shipment.
